Here is a question for young people who have their whole lives ahead of them:
Where will you be 10 years from now? 5 years from now? 1 year from now?
As we have noted on the Make Your Future website, you don’t need a crystal ball or super telepathic powers to know: you need a goal, and a plan, and the willingness to work. Are you ready?
Maybe you hope to win a lottery or find some other easy way to make money; if so, you might be interested in this idea from a teacher in Etobicoke. He asked his class who would like to win a lottery, and every single student put up their hand.
“You have ALREADY won the lottery,” he explained to them. “You live in Canada. You are already luckier than just about everyone else on Earth.”
“You are smart. You are healthy. You have had a good education. You can do anything you want to do, and people are ready to help you. There is nothing to stop you from building the life you want; nothing. So go do it.”
Where do you see yourself in the years ahead? Will you be working at a job you love, or studying in a program that will let you do so?
Will you feel excited and enthusiastic about every day? Will you be looking forward to interesting work, helpful co-workers, and a good paycheque?
You can build the life you want. It won’t be instant, and it won’t always be easy, but you can do it. This is a fact.
So then the question is, “How? How do I start? Where do I turn? Who can I ask to help me?”
We care about you and want to help you get started! I am very excited to be working with MCCSS Minister Lisa McLeod; Spider Jones; Michael “Pinball” Clemons; Kevin Green of Greenwin Investments; Ross McLeod of Intelligarde; Inspector Colin Greenaway from 31 Division Police; a great team of community groups and St. Basil the Great High School, the TCDSB and the TDSB in planning a special day of activities to help YOU get started on a plan to Make Your Future.
Plan to attend the “Make Your Future” event on November 17th, 2018 at St. Basil’s high school (near Weston and Finch).
Hear from inspirational speakers and talk to employers who will be right onsite to tell you what you need to do to go to work for them (in some cases, receive some training; in other cases, simply apply!)
Organizations and agencies who can help you on your path forward will be there give you information and encouragement.
All activities are free but space may be limited; register ahead of time at http://www.makeyourfuture.ca to ensure you are on the guest list.
Where will you be 1 year from now, or 10 years from now? We want to help you figure it out and build the life you want. Join us on November 17 at noon and let’s get started!
